Manchester United are heading into the summer transfer window looking to improve their squad after securing Champions League football. With Casemiro expected to leave Old Trafford, the defensive midfield position is a priority.
Schmeichel’s Suggestion: Xhaka for United?
Peter Schmeichel has suggested Granit Xhaka as a possible signing for Manchester United. “I have one (signing), maybe controversial in thinking, but I think we should go and sign [Granit] Xhaka,” he told The Good, The Bad & The Football podcast. Schmeichel believes Xhaka could be a cheaper alternative and provide valuable leadership.
Schmeichel said, “Cheaper. I make my case, we are going to build a team around Kobbie [Mainoo]. Casemiro is leaving. Bring in [Adam] Wharton and [Elliot] Anderson or whatever, who are still young. What we don’t have really is proper leadership. When I look and see what Xhaka has done at Sunderland, he is the reason why they are absolutely amazing.”
He added, “His leadership qualities are great, he can play 80 per cent of the games, and he is a very good player. I know he can do it. If he does one or two years, we need leadership.”
Xhaka’s Premier League Experience
Xhaka has Premier League experience with both Sunderland and Arsenal. This aligns with Ineos’ apparent target of recruiting players with proven experience in the league. His salary would also be a fraction of Casemiro’s.
Xhaka’s Impact at Sunderland
Xhaka’s importance to Sunderland is evident in their recent form. While he was injured at the end of January, going into February, Sunderland lost three of their four games. Since his return to the starting lineup, Sunderland have lost just three of eight matches.
Audition at Old Trafford
Xhaka has an opportunity to further demonstrate his capabilities this weekend. This weekend, Xhaka could well audition for a spot in United’s squad next season.
Schmeichel’s suggestion might seem controversial, but Xhaka could offer a short-term solution with leadership qualities and Premier League experience.
