Georgia Hunter Bell Secures First Global Title at World Indoors

Georgia Hunter Bell stormed to victory to claim her first global 1500m title at the World Athletics Indoor Championships.

Great Britain achieved their best ever haul at a World Athletics Indoor Championships, claiming three gold medals in a sensational 28 minutes. Following Josh Kerr’s 3,000m triumph on Saturday, the team surpassed their previous best of three golds achieved in 1999.

Hunter Bell’s Journey to Gold

Hunter Bell’s victory kicked off a remarkable evening for the British team. Molly Caudery secured gold in the pole vault, followed by Keely Hodgkinson’s dominant performance in the 800m final.

Hunter Bell, who also secured an Olympic bronze medal, demonstrated her experience by patiently closing the gap on Ethiopia’s Birke Haylom before launching her attack for gold.

  • Hunter Bell won in three minutes 58.53 seconds.
  • Caudery reclaimed the title with a second-time clearance over 4.85 metres.

The British team captain in Torun, Hunter Bell had won both of her 1500m races this season in preparation for a first global crown.

From Tech Sales to World Champion

This was 32-year-old Hunter Bell’s fifth major international medal, and fourth on the global stage. She continues to establish herself at the top of a sport from which she took a five-year break before returning in 2022.

After making the Olympic podium on her debut at Paris 2024, and edging training partner Hodgkinson to world 800m silver in September, Hunter Bell’s journey to the top of the sport is complete.

Hunter Bell had made rapid improvement since re-establishing contact with coach Trevor Painter after repeated injuries and a move to America caused her to fall out of love with the sport. Co-coach Jenny Meadows recalled responding to her husband Painter’s news of Hunter Bell getting back in touch with: “Well, that ship has sailed”.

“This time two years ago I was working in tech sales, now I’m a world champion,” Hunter Bell told BBC Sport.

The fourth-placed finish at the 2024 world indoors in Glasgow proved to Hunter Bell she could compete with the world’s best – and should take a summer sabbatical from her full-time job to achieve her Olympic dream.
