Boxing Legend George Foreman Laid to Rest in Iowa

Former heavyweight boxing champion George Foreman has been laid to rest in Northwest Iowa, according to Sioux City officials and family members.

Foreman’s family stated that a visit to the region in 1988 made a lasting impression. He often spoke of the area’s landscape and the sense of peace he felt during that visit, according to his family.

Foreman’s Final Resting Place

Honoring his request, Foreman’s family travelled from Texas and laid him to rest at Logan Park Cemetery in Sioux City on April 17, 2025. The location overlooks the Loess Hills and is near Stone State Park.

A family representative stated that upon arrival, they understood why Foreman wanted to be buried there, saying, “It looked exactly like he described.”

On April 16, 2026, Foreman’s family returned to Sioux City to visit his monument and thank city officials who assisted with the burial.

A Life Remembered

The family released a statement saying, “Our father lived a life of purpose, faith and gratitude. To see him laid to rest in a place that brought him peace means everything to us.”

  • Foreman won a gold medal at the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City.
  • He became heavyweight champion in 1973.
  • In 1994, at age 45, he became the oldest heavyweight boxing champion in history.

After retiring in 1977, Foreman became an ordained minister and later returned to boxing in 1987.

He became known as an entrepreneur, particularly for the George Foreman Grill, and remained active as a minister, author, and public speaker.

Tributes and Legacy

Foreman, who died in March 2025, is survived by his wife, 10 children, grandchild, great grandchildren and extended family.

Sioux City Mayor Bob Scott stated, “Their story is a reminder of how one place can stay with someone for a lifetime.”
