Gaston Takes Early Lead, Faces Injury Concern
As the match intensified, Hugo Gaston, the younger of the two French players, experienced pain and required assistance from the tournament doctor. Gaston held a 4-3 lead in the second set but saw his break advantage erased by Gaël Monfils.
The intensity of the match increased as Gaston and Monfils battled. Monfils, struggling with only nine matches played this year before this tournament, appeared rough. Monfils had 14 unforced errors and only 5 winners, landing only 40% of his first serves.
Monfils Mounts a Comeback
Monfils, in his final Roland-Garros, faced Hugo Gaston in the first round. The veteran player managed to break Hugo Gaston’s serve for the first time in the match. It took him six break points to level the score at 3-2, with his serve to follow.
Despite flashes of brilliance from Monfils, including powerful forehands, he struggled to convert them into a lead, with Gaston holding a 2-1 advantage in the second set.
Monfils struggled, making errors and poor choices, including a poorly executed drop shot that gave Gaston an easy winning shot. He won only 27% of his second-serve points and faced at least one break point in four of his six service games.
