Frances Tiafoe is preparing to face Jannik Sinner in the Miami quarterfinal. The home favourite will attempt to end the second seed’s 28-match winning streak against American opponents.
Tiafoe’s Road to the Quarterfinal
Tiafoe reached the quarterfinals after being pushed to the brink in previous matches. He staved off a pair of match points to defeat reigning champion Jakub Mensik in a final-set tiebreaker. He then recovered late to hold off Terence Atmane in the round of 16.
Tiafoe attributes his success to an evolved mindset on the court. He believes he can now pull the trigger to end an exchange or hang tough in a grueling rally to get the job done.
“I’m relying on suffering. No free lunches. If they’re going to get over the line, let them go and earn it,” he said. “Sometimes you gotta see what happens. Guys are nervous, too.
“Today felt like a bigger win than yesterday, to be honest. With the 4-4, 0-40 down and pulling that out, that’s not a match I win about a year ago.”
This marks Tiafoe’s first 1000-level quarterfinal since contesting the biggest title match of his career with Sinner.
Visualisation and Mindset
When asked about visualization, Tiafoe shared, “I definitely take a second and think about the positive things that may go on in a match. As of late, I close my eyes and think about shaking the guy’s hand with the win. Positive plays are going to help me win. Kind of put myself in that position before it already happens. I think that’s very real. Manifestation is monumental.”
Sinner’s Dominance
Sinner has won a record 28 consecutive sets in ATP Masters 1000 competition on his way to another last eight appearance at Hard Rock Stadium. In addition to his set streak at the 1000s, Sinner has clinched 28 consecutive victories against American opponents dating back to the 2023 Shanghai Masters.
Sinner has won four of their five meetings.
The last time Frances Tiafoe squared off against a Top 2 opponent outside of the Laver Cup was the 2024 Cincinnati Open final, when then world No. 1 Jannik Sinner claimed a 7-6 (4), 6-2 victory.
Tiafoe said, “I’m excited to get out there and see what he’s looking like. I love these types of matches. It’s gonna be a good one.”
The match is set to take place on Thursday.
