Flamengo took a stand against racism during their match against Remo on Thursday night at the Maracanã.
Before the match, players from both teams and fans made the ‘X’ gesture with their arms. This is a FIFA protocol in case of racial offenses during matches. Zico, considered the club’s greatest icon, also participated in the campaign.
Players and Fans Unite Against Racism
While the players made the ‘X’ gesture, Emerson Royal, Flamengo’s right-back, encouraged the fans to repeat the gesture in the stands.
Zico’s Call to Action
During the week, Zico recorded a video calling on Flamengo supporters to join the cause.
Zico stated that Flamengo wants to be recognised as the first symbolic-cultural Nation in the world before the UN. He added that if they are a Nation, they need to act like one, because every Nation has responsibility. He said that is why they entered the UN’s football program. He stated they want to make an even clearer commitment: to give visibility to racial equality.
Zico finished by saying that for Flamengo, combating racism is not just an institutional position, but a club policy, present in their statute and in their daily life, and invited people to join them in a major action against racism at the Maracanã, during the Flamengo and Remo game.
