Facebook, Facebook Messenger, and Instagram are down this morning as thousands of users across the world report issues. Many users are experiencing an error message when trying to log in on the desktop version of Facebook, indicating widespread disruption. The problems appear to be affecting users worldwide, though not the entirety of the platforms.
Users attempting to access the desktop version of Facebook are greeted with a specific message. The error reads: “Account Temporarily Unavailable. Your account is currently unavailable due to a site issue. We expect this to be resolved shortly. Please try again in a few minutes.”
The website DownDetector, an online platform that provides real-time information about the status of various websites, shows a significant spike in reports from Facebook users just before 9am on Sunday morning. This same site also indicates a huge spike in reports for Facebook Messenger and Instagram, both occurring on Sunday morning. Both of these affected platforms are owned by the social media giant Meta.
The nature of the issues varies between platforms. Instagram users are reporting difficulties with accessing their feed and the platform’s app, while Facebook users are primarily reporting problems with the desktop version of the platform. Nearly 60 per cent of issues reported on Facebook this morning are related to the website version of the platform.
Instagram users are also receiving a distinct error message. Their notifications state: “Sorry, something went wrong. We’re working on getting this fixed as soon as we can”.
User experiences highlight the mixed impact of the outage. Facebook users report being able to use the platform on the app, but not on the desktop version. One user shared their experience, reporting: “Facebook loads on phone but not on laptop. Keep getting Account temporarily unavailable etc…… Working on phone just not on laptop.”
Another user in the United Kingdom questioned the duration of the outage, writing: “Yep happening to me here in the UK, cant access desktop version. any idea when this might be resolved?” A Reddit user offered further insight, commenting: “The website doesn’t work for me too, but the mobile app still works. Unfortunately I also cannot use the call feature of messenger. It tells me that my app is outdated but I tried uninstalling and reinstalling it and still get the same error.”
At present, it remains unclear when the issue will be fully resolved across the affected platforms.
