Esmerlyn Valdez has been recalled by the Pirates from Triple-A Indianapolis. This marks Valdez’s first promotion to the major leagues.
Valdez’s Minor League Performance
At Indianapolis, Valdez slashed .253/.381/.506. He also recorded 10 homers and 29 RBI over 194 plate appearances.
Filling the Gap in Right Field
Valdez has primarily played in right field during his minor-league career. He is a logical choice to fill in as Pittsburgh’s right fielder while Ryan O’Hearn is on the injured list with a quad injury.
Competition for Playing Time
Jhostynxon Garcia was also recalled from Triple-A on Tuesday for a similar purpose. It is unclear how reps will be divided between Valdez and Garcia.
