Nikolaj Ehlers’ overtime goal secured a 3-2 victory for the Carolina Hurricanes against the Montreal Canadiens. The win on Saturday night levelled the Eastern Conference Final at one game apiece.
Ehlers’ Heroics Seal the Deal
Ehlers got loose up the centre of the ice and put the puck past Jakub Dobes at 3:29 of overtime. This dramatic moment sent the home crowd into a relieved but jubilant roar.
Ehlers himself described yelling pretty loudly after the winning goal. “I can barely talk right now, but I was yelling pretty loudly after that OT winner,” Ehlers said.
According to Ehlers, it was a great pass that allowed him to get some speed and get the puck off his stick as quick as possible to surprise Dobes.
A Sought-After Talent Delivers
Ehlers, an offseason addition, demonstrated his value with two goals, including the decisive overtime winner. His first goal was a highlight-reel individual effort in the second period against two Montreal defenders.
Carolina coach Rod Brind’Amour praised Ehlers. “He’s a special talent,” Brind’Amour said, “and it was on full display tonight.”
How the Winning Goal Happened
The winning sequence began with Jalen Chatfield retreating and bouncing the puck back into the neutral zone to Mark Jankowski. Jankowski then quickly redirected the puck to Ehlers, who entered the zone at full speed. This set up a clean look at Dobes for the winning goal.
Dobes, who had 23 saves, said it was over pretty quick and they didn’t get a second breath.
Hurricanes Aimed to Reclaim Their Style
The Carolina Hurricanes knew they needed to play more to their style to get back into the series against Montreal. They managed to do that for most of Saturday night’s Game 2.
The Hurricanes also benefited from a strong performance by Ehlers.
With the series tied, both teams will be looking to gain an advantage as the Eastern Conference Final progresses.
