Ecuador and Saudi Arabia Gear Up for 2026 World Cup

Ecuador and Saudi Arabia will face each other in an international friendly at Sports Illustrated Stadium in Harrison, New Jersey. Both teams are using the match to prepare for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America.

The match will be only the second time the two nations have met. Their first encounter was in September 2022 and ended in a goalless draw.

Ecuador’s World Cup Preparations

Ecuador are preparing for their fifth FIFA World Cup appearance. They have been drawn in Group E alongside Germany, Cote d’Ivoire and Curacao.

La Tri qualified for a second consecutive World Cup after finishing second in the CONMEBOL standings. They lost just two of their 18 matches and conceded only two goals in their final 12 qualifiers after Sebastian Beccacece took over from Felix Sanchez.

Ecuador will begin their campaign on June 15 against Ivory Coast at Philadelphia Stadium. Their aim is to surpass their 2006 performance in Germany, where they reached the round of 16 before being knocked out by England.

Beccacece is preparing his squad with friendlies against Saudi Arabia and Guatemala. Ecuador are currently unbeaten in their last six matches, all of which have been international friendlies. This run includes one victory over New Zealand and draws against the Netherlands, Morocco, Canada, Mexico, and the United States.

Saudi Arabia’s World Cup Journey

Saudi Arabia are preparing for their seventh World Cup appearance. Just two months before the FIFA World Cup begins, Saudi Arabia parted ways with head coach Herve Renard and appointed Georgios Donis.

The Green Falcons have been drawn in Group H alongside Spain, Uruguay and Cape Verde.

Saudi Arabia’s opening group match is against Uruguay on June 15. In preparation, they have arranged friendlies against Ecuador and Senegal.

The Green Falcons famously stunned Argentina during the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. They will hope to equal or surpass their best-ever World Cup performance, which was a run to the round of 16 at USA 1994.

With both teams looking to fine-tune their strategies and build momentum, this friendly match provides a valuable opportunity to assess their squads before the challenges of the 2026 World Cup.
