Mark DeRosa, manager of Team USA, has addressed the fallout from comments he made earlier in the week regarding the team’s World Baseball Classic (WBC) performance. He spoke after Italy’s victory over Mexico secured a spot for the U.S. in the quarterfinals.
DeRosa clarified that he and his players were aware they had not clinched a quarterfinals berth before their loss to Italy.
DeRosa’s Remarks and Team USA’s Mindset
DeRosa admitted his statement on ‘Hot Stove’ was an overly confident one and took responsibility for it. He stated that he felt good about where the team was after the Mexico game.
He said he was well aware that they had to win against Italy, knowing the tiebreaker rules involved.
Team Bonding and Preparation
DeRosa also addressed commentary about the team bonding after their win over Mexico and its potential impact on the subsequent game against Italy. He defended the team’s bonding, saying it helped create a team environment.
According to DeRosa, inviting the coaches to spend time together after the win was special. He insisted that they did not lose sight of the need to play well against Italy, who he acknowledged played a great game.
Looking Ahead to Canada
DeRosa acknowledged Italy’s role in the U.S. advancing in the WBC. He said the team went into the game against Italy a little overly confident and got a huge wake-up call.
Team USA is set to face Canada, a team that won its pool outright. DeRosa stated the team is fired up to be in that room and sees this as a new lease on life.
Team USA is still aiming to win gold at the Classic.
