Dennis Taylor Backs Zhao Xintong to Break Crucible Curse

Dennis Taylor has voiced his belief that Zhao Xintong could be the player to finally break the ‘Crucible Curse’ at the World Snooker Championship. No first time world champion has defended the title since the tournament moved to the Crucible in 1977. Zhao Xintong won the event in 2025, beating Mark Williams 18-12 in the final.

Taylor also believes that Ronnie O’Sullivan could be in contention for a historic eighth world crown. He also expressed hope that fellow Northern Irishman Mark Allen can follow in the footsteps of himself and Alex Higgins by lifting the trophy.

Taylor’s Top Three for the Title

Taylor has named the three players he believes can win this year’s World Championship: Ronnie O’Sullivan, Zhao Xintong and Judd Trump. He believes they all have stories. Taylor still thinks Ronnie can beat Stephen Hendry’s record of seven world titles.

Taylor said that O’Sullivan making the 153 break was incredible. He said that O’Sullivan never looked in trouble and didn’t get done, adding that it was a pity he never got 155. Taylor found it funny that O’Sullivan called himself ‘Rusty Rocket’ after winning, as people have questioned whether he can win tournaments when he doesn’t play as often.

Why Zhao Xintong Can Win

Taylor believes Zhao Xintong can beat the Crucible Curse. He thinks Zhao Xintong is capable of doing that and loves the way he plays the game. Taylor says Zhao Xintong reminds him a lot of Ronnie with the way he flows into the shot and that he’s just such a complete player and is great to watch.

Trump’s Talent Deserves Another Title

Taylor also commented on Judd Trump, saying that when you think of the talent, that he’s world number one and he’s only won one world title. He believes that it’s only right for him to win again. Taylor’s favourite is Zhao Xintong, with Ronnie second, and then Judd Trump.

Taylor said that he wouldn’t really pick anybody outside those three. He notes that Kyren Wilson is a great player, but the fact that there’s been so many different winners this season is incredible for the game.

The Crucible’s Importance

Taylor dearly hopes the World Championship remains in Sheffield for years to come. He emphasised the Crucible’s unique atmosphere and its importance to the identity of the sport.
