De Zerbi to Tottenham? Neville Brands Spurs Season ‘Pathetic’

Tottenham narrowly avoided Premier League relegation, securing their status with a 1-0 victory over Everton on the final day. They finished just two points above West Ham. But pundit Gary Neville didn’t hold back, branding the club’s season ‘pathetic’.

Neville’s Scathing Criticism of Spurs

Neville criticised the club ownership and called for a thorough review of what has gone wrong. He highlighted that Spurs have finished 17th in the table for the second consecutive season. Neville stated that major surgery is required to return Tottenham to the top end of English football.

‘Is it too far to say that they’ve been pathetic? That they should be ashamed of themselves? Probably not,’ Neville said. He added, ‘This is Tottenham Hotspur…this is a football club steeped in incredible traditions.’

Neville acknowledged their Europa League win last year, but stressed that they have been underachievers for a long time. He believes this season represents a new low.

De Zerbi’s Task: Overhauling the Squad

Neville believes that Roberto De Zerbi will have to assess which players are committed to the club. ‘He’s probably worked it out already,’ Neville said.

Neville pointed out Tottenham’s poor home form, not having won a game since Christmas. He described the team as ‘flimsy, they’re weak, they’re vulnerable’.

He called for a complete overhaul of the dressing room, stating, ‘Now they know for real, having escaped today, they can start to basically drive a bulldozer through that dressing room because that’s what they need to do.’

Ownership Under Fire

Neville questioned the connection throughout the club. He said, ‘We hear that the owners have been trying to sell this club for two or three, four years now, trying to get as high a price as possible.’ He acknowledged their infrastructure achievements, but stated that they have ‘failed the fans on the pitch’.

De Zerbi is setting out his plans for next season.
