Darts Referee’s Opera Calls Backed by Michael Smith, Admits Official

Referee Franz Engerer has said that Michael Smith backed his operatic 180 calls. The German official made his debut last year with theatrical maximum shouts and immediately came under fire from Nathan Aspinall.

Engerer, who was described as “eye candy” by Laura Woods, went viral on social media and has vowed never to change.

Smith’s Input on the 180 Call

Engerer said that Michael Smith gave him feedback on his 180 calls. “The first 180 I called was very different and not sung. But some players told me, especially Michael Smith, said to me ‘good start but the end is b******t’.

“So I changed the end and it’s much better. Even though I got some haters as well, I think it suits me.”

Aspinall’s Criticism and Engerer’s Response

Last year World No14 Aspinall revealed his dislike towards Engerer’s choir-esque calling.

On hearing Aspinall’s criticism, Engerer added: “At first it was pretty weird for me hearing that. I’m pretty good with Nathan. He doesn’t mean anything bad out of it. I think it’s the only player who said that about my 180 but I won’t change it anymore and he’ll have to live with it!”

Aspinall said: “You know what? I was on a train and I was watching the game.

“He was shouting and I was like, ‘I actually don’t think I could play if he was reffing.’

“I just don’t like the call. Nothing against the guy. Don’t sack him. It’s not for me.”

Engerer’s Background and Popularity

Engerer has been taking singing lessons and performing in choirs since seventh grade and understands his style isn’t for everyone.

He said: “Most of the feedback has been really lovely.

“Of course, not everyone’s a fan – and that’s fine, especially with how unique my 180 is – but it’s amazing to get that recognition.

“People come up to me asking for photos, and that’s just surreal.

“I’ve been taking singing lessons and singing in a choir since seventh grade.

“We’ve performed everything from operas to musicals and solos.”

The saxophone player’s journey into darts officiating began at grassroots competitions like the PDC Europe Super League.

Encouraged by positive feedback, he applied for a caller position and has since become a notable figure on the PDC tour.
