Darius Slay Calls Time on NFL Career After 13 Seasons

Darius Slay has announced his retirement from the NFL after 13 seasons. He made the announcement via a statement posted to social media.

“This game put me in a position to take care of my family and loved ones and I’m forever grateful. It’s hard to say goodbye, but God has a new chapter for me and I’m ready to turn the page and start my new journey,” he wrote.

Slay’s Steelers Stint and Contemplation

Slay’s departure from the league follows a season where he played in 10 games for the Pittsburgh Steelers, starting nine. He recorded 36 total tackles, a fumble recovery and three passes defensed.

Prior to his time with the Steelers, Slay was claimed off waivers by the Buffalo Bills last December after being released by Pittsburgh. However, he chose not to report to the team. His agent, Drew Rosenhaus, told ESPN’s Adam Schefter that Slay was contemplating his future at that time.

Super Bowl Glory and Career Stats

Before joining the Steelers, Slay spent five years with the Philadelphia Eagles. In 2024, he won a Super Bowl with the franchise. He was then released the next offseason before signing with the Steelers.

Across his 13 seasons, Slay accumulated impressive statistics. He recorded 655 tackles, 163 passes defended, and 28 interceptions. Slay earned Pro Bowl honours six times and was a first-team All-Pro in 2017.

Slay’s career began with the Detroit Lions, who selected him in the second round of the 2013 draft out of Mississippi State.

End of an Era

Slay, aged 35, leaves the NFL after a career that spanned over a decade and included individual accolades and a Super Bowl victory.
