Dan Hurley’s Touchline Antics: Fines and Referee Confrontations

UConn head coach Dan Hurley is known for his fiery sideline behaviour, particularly during March Madness. The 53-year-old, who has guided the Huskies to national championships in 2023 and 2024, has a history of confrontations with referees.

Hurley’s Run-In with John Gaffney

Earlier this month, following a 68-62 defeat to Marquette, Hurley confronted referee John Gaffney. The UConn head coach appeared to bump into Gaffney, but Hurley was adamant that he did not.

Despite Hurley’s denial, he was fined $25,000 for unsportsmanlike conduct. The conference stated that a review of the game footage could not confirm physical contact, so the fine was for his behaviour.

A History of Questioning Officials

While the alleged bumping of a referee is a recent development, Hurley’s history of lashing out at officiating crews is well-established. In November 2024, after unranked Memphis defeated No. 2 UConn in overtime, Hurley was particularly vocal.

Hurley told CBS Sports that he thought it was the “s—-y calls” and that he did not know too many back-to-back national championship teams that get that type of a whistle.

Continued Criticism and Apologies

Months later, Hurley continued to criticise the officials. Even after UConn’s 80-78 overtime win against Butler in January 2025, Hurley pointed to the free-throw disparity, which was 28-14 in favour of Butler.

Hurley said, “For all the success we have had over the last couple of years, I don’t think there’s a program that’s won as much as we’ve won that, at times, gets as bad a whistle.” Cameras caught Hurley telling a referee: “Don’t turn your back on me. I’m the best coach in the f—ing sport.”

After UConn lost to Florida in the second round of the NCAA Tournament last year, Hurley was caught on camera criticising the officials, shouting: “I hope they don’t f— you like they f—ed us. I hope they don’t do that to you, Baylor.”

Hurley often apologizes. Earlier this season, he owned up to his poor behavior after claiming he h
