Coventry City have moved a step closer to a Premier League return. The Sky Blues now sit 11 points clear of third place after their 3-0 away win.
Sky Blues Capitalise on Rivals’ Draws
Middlesbrough, Ipswich and Millwall all failed to win in the day’s early games. This set the stage for Coventry to capitalise, and they did just that. They battered Swansea 3-0, who hadn’t lost at home since 25 November.
Ex-Coventry City goalkeeper Steve Ogrizovic said that the win topped off what has been a great day for Coventry all round, with no wins for Middlesbrough, Millwall or Ipswich.
Swansea Stunned by Coventry’s Attack
After an evenly-contested opening 30 minutes, the game turned on a penalty. Ephron Mason-Clark was felled in the area, and Brandon Thomas-Asante scored from the spot. Quick goals from Matt Grimes and Tatushiro Sakamoto followed, making it 3-0.
According to Steve Ogrizovic, Coventry were living dangerously at times in the first half, despite being 3-0 up. Swansea hit the post twice.
Second Half Cruise for Coventry
The second half was a total non-event, which suited Coventry just fine. Steve Ogrizovic noted that Coventry have been really good in the second period, and seemed a bit off it in the first half despite the three goals. He described Coventry’s second-half performance as almost faultless and the best performance he has seen, stating that Coventry were in total control.
Marko Stamenic was booked for the home side for a trip on Josh Eccles.
Melker Widell’s ball across from the left was perfect for top scorer Zan Vipotnik at the back stick, but he sliced his effort horribly wide.
Grimes Shows Respect After Scoring
Coventry City skipper Matt Grimes, speaking to Sky Sports, said it was important they responded after last week’s setback, adding that they stuck at it after Swansea started well. On not celebrating his goal, Grimes said it’s strange coming back, that he spent a long time at Swansea, and has a lot of love for the club, so he didn’t celebrate out of respect.
Grimes commented on going nine points clear of second-placed Middlesbrough, saying that they’ve just got to keep ticking the games off. He added that they’ll reset, get a bit of rest, and crack on against Derby.
The second tier now has 13 days off before returning on Good Friday.
