The Connecticut Sun emerged victorious against the Los Angeles Sparks with a final score of 84-81. The game took place at PeoplesBank Arena on Saturday night. Aneesah Morrow’s standout performance helped secure the win for the Sun.
Morrow’s Double-Double Fuels Sun Victory
Aneesah Morrow had 17 points and 14 rebounds, achieving her fourth consecutive double-double. This was also her seventh double-double this season, leading the WNBA. Kennedy Burke contributed 14 points for the Sun, while Leila Lacan and Diamond Miller each added 12 points.
The Connecticut Sun (2-8) ended a three-game losing streak. They tied their season high with 11 steals during the game.
Sparks’ Efforts Fall Short
Ariel Atkins and Rae Burrell each scored 16 points for the Sparks (4-4). Erica Wheeler added 13 points, and Dearica Hamby scored 11. Ogwumike finished with 12 points and three rebounds.
Wheeler made a layup early in the fourth quarter, but the Sparks struggled to score another field goal until late in the quarter. Burrell’s three-pointer brought the Sparks within two points with 52 seconds remaining.
Griner’s Return Cut Short
Brittney Griner returned from a four-game absence due to a rib injury. However, she left the game after apparently being poked in the eye. Griner finished with nine points.
Lacan’s Impact and Plum’s Absence
Leila Lacan, who recently won a championship and was named finals MVP in the top French professional league, made her season debut. Last season, Lacan averaged 10.4 points, 3.7 assists and 2.2 steals as a rookie for Connecticut. The Sun had a 2-17 record before Lacan returned and went 9-16 after.
Kelsey Plum missed her second consecutive game due to an ankle injury. Plum, the WNBA’s leading scorer at 28.6 points per game, will be re-evaluated on Tuesday.
The Sparks will host Las Vegas on Tuesday.
