White House College Sports Roundtable Excludes Student-Athletes

A recent White House roundtable on college sports, organised by President Donald Trump, has ignited debate about the role of student-athletes in shaping the future of collegiate athletics.

The roundtable, attended by politicians and college representatives but lacking student-athlete representation, has been criticised for hypocrisy. The absence of student-athletes raises questions about whose voices are being heard in discussions that directly affect them.

Trump’s Executive Order and NIL Concerns

Trump declared his intention to issue an executive order addressing concerns around name, image, and likeness (NIL) payments for student-athletes. He anticipates legal challenges to the order, but aims to implement it within a week. The proposed order seeks to revert to pre-NIL conditions in college sports.

The idea that NIL payments might doom the country’s higher education landscape conveniently skips over more urgent variables affecting our colleges and universities.

The Call for Athlete Representation

There is a pressing need for student-athletes to have their voices heard. It is argued that student-athletes, who are responsible for the labour that fuels the billion-dollar industry of college athletics, might be blamed for all of it going to pieces just because they are being paid.

Challenges Facing Higher Education

College enrollment nationwide is on a decade-long decline. Undergraduate enrollment was 15 percent lower in fall 2021 than in fall 2010, with 42 percent of this decline occurring during the pandemic.

  • The “enrollment cliff” suggests the number of high school graduates peaked in 2025.
  • A decline of nearly 15 years is set to follow, limiting the number of eligible enrollees to college.

Dramatic cuts in federal funding also pose a challenge to the collegiate landscape. Narratives about “woke” campuses and rampant xenophobia have led to the dismantling of the Department of Education, the revocation of student visas, and political threats and policies that have either halted or outright cut funding to schools.

It is important that someone speaks up for the athletes at this moment.
