Coco Gauff’s Ranking Under Scrutiny in Alternative Tennis List

Aryna Sabalenka currently holds a significant lead in the WTA Rankings. However, an alternative ranking list suggests her advantage might be less substantial. This different perspective comes from the Universal Tennis Rating (UTR) system, which uses a unique algorithm to assess players.

How UTR Differs From WTA Rankings

The WTA Rankings consider points earned over the past 52 weeks. In contrast, the Universal Tennis Rating (UTR) prioritises recent results and victories against higher-ranked opponents.

UTR is open to all tennis players, evaluating them on a scale from 1.00 to 16.50. This system considers matches from the last 12 months, focusing on a player’s most recent 30 matches.

Gauff’s UTR Ranking Compared to WTA

World No 4 Coco Gauff is ranked eighth by UTR with a rating of 12.83. This places her below Elina Svitolina and Karolina Muchova in the UTR rankings.

The UTR ratings of other top players are as follows:

  • Aryna Sabalenka – 13.26 (WTA Ranking – 1)
  • Elena Rybakina – 13.21 (WTA Ranking – 3)
  • Jessica Pegula – 12.99 (WTA Ranking – 5)
  • Iga Swiatek – 12.97 (WTA Ranking – 2)

Sabalenka Leads UTR, Rybakina Close Behind

Sabalenka tops the UTR ratings with a score of 13.26. Elena Rybakina is her closest challenger on this list, holding a UTR rating of 13.21.

Sabalenka has not competed since the Australian Open final in January. She won the Brisbane International earlier in 2026.

Jessica Pegula climbed to third on the UTR list after her victory at the WTA 1000 event in Dubai last month. Her UTR rating is 12.99. Pegula was also a semi-finalist at the 2026 Australian Open.

Iga Swiatek has a UTR rating of 12.97. She exited both the Australian Open and the Dubai Championships in the quarter-finals, causing her to fall to the No 4 spot in the UTR rankings.

Amanda Anisimova is fifth on the UTR list with a rating of 12.91. She is ranked sixth on the WTA tour.

The Indian Wells Open is currently underway. Emma Raducanu, Victoria Mboko, and Alex Eala have signed up for the women’s doubles.
