CJ Gunn Wins 3-Point Contest Amidst Boos in Hometown Return

CJ Gunn, a DePaul senior, secured victory in the men’s 3-point shooting contest at the College Slam Dunk & 3-Point Championships. The event took place at Hinkle Fieldhouse on Friday. However, the Indianapolis native’s win was met with an unexpected reaction.

Following the title-clinching shot, boos echoed around the arena as the replay was shown. The boos intensified when the camera focused on Gunn, who was sporting the champion’s gold chain. Gunn had previously played for Indiana.

A Mixed Reception for the Hometown Hero

Gunn, a 2022 Lawrence North graduate, found the reaction amusing. “I’m from Indiana. I don’t know why everybody was booing me like that,” Gunn said. He added, “Yeah, yeah. I like it that way, though, man.”

Despite the boos, Gunn appreciated closing out his college career in his hometown. Lawrence North High School, where he set records and led the Wildcats to a Class 4A state runner-up finish in 2021, is located just a few miles away.

Gunn’s Collegiate Career

Gunn played in 54 games for DePaul, starting in 44 of them. As a Blue Devil, he was the team’s leading scorer for two seasons. He averaged 13 points, totalling 832, while shooting 41.4% from the field.

“This has been an amazing experience. It feels like just yesterday was my first year of college,” Gunn stated. He reflected on his journey, saying, “How much I’ve learned and the basketball player I became; all the lessons from transferring to being at IU my first year, it’s all just a blessing. I’m blessed to be here and to be able to be put in this position.”

Late Addition and Family Support

Gunn was a last-minute addition to the 3-point contest. He received a call from coach Chris Holtmann a couple of nights prior, informing him of his participation. Gunn was already planning a visit to his family, so the timing was ideal.

He also had a strong support system in the audience. Friends, family, and coaches from his past and present were all in attendance.

Overcoming Nerves

Gunn admitted to initial nervousness. “That first round, I was a little nervous,” Gunn confessed. “That’s why I didn’t shoot it that well. But that first round motivated me to do better.”

In the overall championship round, Gunn was defeated by Kansas’ Elle Evans on a buzzer beater.

“It’s a blessing to be able to come here and have the opportunity to pick up a basketball back in my hometown and put on a show for the crowd,” Gunn smiled. “And also to get to know these guys who are here with me tonight. Man, it’s just been an amazing opportunity.”
