Cincinnati Bengals’ Draft Strategy: Kiper’s Mock and Potential Picks

The Cincinnati Bengals’ draft strategy is under scrutiny as the NFL draft approaches. More mock drafts are suggesting that the Bengals will target LSU cornerback Mansoor Delane. ESPN’s Mel Kiper has released a two-round mock draft that aligns with this prediction.

Kiper’s First Round Pick: Mansoor Delane

Kiper’s mock draft has the Bengals selecting Mansoor Delane at No. 10. Kiper notes that Delane is technically sound and can make plays to get the defence off the field, giving the ball to quarterback Joe Burrow. Delane had 27 pass breakups and eight interceptions over four college seasons, including three at Virginia Tech.

The availability of Sonny Styles and Caleb Downs could influence the Bengals’ decision. Cornerback is considered a premium position. The Bengals already have boundary starters in Dax Hill and DJ Turner. Delane’s arrival could lead to a shift in Hill’s role, which carries some risk. However, the Bengals need a slot starter and insurance in case contract negotiations with Turner and Hill falter.

Second Round Selection: Cashius Howell

In the second round, Kiper projects the Bengals to pick Texas A&M pass-rusher Cashius Howell. Kiper highlighted Howell’s production last season, noting 11.5 sacks and 16.5 tackles for loss. This could be a strategic pick for a Cincinnati team that has lost Trey Hendrickson.

Howell offers more proven production than Shemar Stewart did last year. He could develop into a valuable rotational player following the departures of Trey Hendrickson, Joseph Ossai and Cam Sample.

Draft Outcome Assessment

This draft outcome is viewed as positive for the Bengals if a trade-down isn’t feasible. While securing Styles or Downs would be preferable, addressing the cornerback position is a priority. The Bengals would still rely on breakouts from Stewart and Myles Murphy, and improved performance from Boye Mafe compared to his time in Seattle. While there are risks, this draft could yield positive results if the board falls this way.
