Chelsea have agreed a club record £117m deal to sign England midfielder Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa. The 23-year-old is set to sign a six-year deal at Stamford Bridge, which includes an option for a further year.
Rogers will undergo a medical examination on Monday, following his return from international duty with England at the 2026 World Cup. This agreement represents the most expensive signing in Chelsea’s history, surpassing the £107m spent on Argentina midfielder Enzo Fernandez in 2023.
New English Transfer Record Set
The transfer fee for Morgan Rogers would establish a new record for an English player. It eclipses the £116m fee Manchester City agreed with Nottingham Forest for another Three Lions midfielder, Elliot Anderson, earlier this summer.
Rogers, who was previously on the books of Manchester City, joined Aston Villa from Championship side Middlesbrough on 1 February, 2024. He has been a key part of Aston Villa’s squad for two and a half seasons.
Rogers’ Career at Villa and England
During his time at Villa, Rogers scored 21 goals in 85 league appearances for Unai Emery’s men. He was also a member of the team that secured the Europa League title last season.
On the international stage, Rogers has earned 21 senior England appearances, scoring once. He featured in six games for England at this summer’s World Cup.
Alonso Shapes His Chelsea Squad
The move for Rogers comes as new Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso works to shape his squad. This activity is taking place before the commencement of the new Premier League season.
Rogers’ six-year deal, with an option for a further year, underlines the long-term commitment from Chelsea for their new record signing.
