Championship Table: Supercomputer Predicts Middlesbrough Promotion

A supercomputer is backing Middlesbrough to win automatic promotion to the Premier League this season, by the smallest of margins.

AceOdds’ supercomputer, BETSiE, uses a sophisticated method to predict the final outcome of the league table. It simulates every remaining game 1,000 times to come up with an average final points tally.

How the Supercomputer Predicts the Championship Table

The individual match simulations are done based on an algorithm. This algorithm factors in pre-season expectations, fixture difficulty, and underlying performance metrics such as xG for and against.

It also integrates team financial data and player values from Transfermarkt, adding a deeper layer of insight into squad strength and potential performance variations.

Middlesbrough’s Predicted Championship Finish

Having run its data, simmed the matches 1,000 times, and presented an average final points tally, the supercomputer concluded that Boro will pip Ipswich Town to second place by the smallest of margins.

The supercomputer found Boro finished, on average, with a points tally of 83.9. Ipswich only managed 83.2, according to the simulation.

Their simulation found Ipswich instead having to make do with a play-off place.

Probability of Promotion

Rating the probability of each scenario, BETSiE calculated that Boro have a 49.4% chance of finishing in top two. Ipswich are slightly lower on 46.9%.

Millwall’s chances of winning automatic promotion was calculated to be just 4.5% despite staying in the race to this point.

Kim Hellberg, who himself is very data-driven, will be hoping BETSiE’s predictions are spot on come the end of the season!
