Michael Carrick is looking to take lessons from Manchester United’s recent defeat. After the 2-1 loss to 10-man Newcastle at St James’ Park, Carrick acknowledged the need for improvement. He believes the upcoming period before their match against Aston Villa could be season-defining.
Carrick stated the defeat was disappointing and the performance fell short of expectations. He added that lessons will be learned, and the team will aim to respond positively. He is not one to publicly criticise his players.
Carrick’s Perspective on the Defeat
Carrick said that they are “bitterly disappointed” and that “it hurts”. He felt they “came here in good shape”. The way it panned out is very disappointing and there is no two ways about that.
While Carrick’s initial run of results included six wins and a draw from his first seven games, he acknowledges results don’t tell the whole story. He headed back to the north-east with a winning mentality.
Performances Under Scrutiny
Manchester United’s performances have been inconsistent. Carrick himself described their performance against West Ham as “stodgy’. It took an injury-time Benjamin Sesko goal to salvage a point.
Against Everton, Sesko scored the only notable passage of play from either side. Against Crystal Palace, their response to going behind was muted until Matheus Cunha won a penalty, which also resulted in a red card for the opposition.
Squad Depth Issues
Carrick is aware of his team’s limitations in terms of squad depth. By the final whistle at St James’ Park, Matthijs de Ligt, Mason Mount, Lisandro Martinez, Noussair Mazraoui and Patrick Dorgu were all absent because of injury. Casemiro and Luke Shaw were off the pitch feeling the effects of two hard games in four days.
Carrick does not have the squad depth to cover those losses and still keep standards high. Manchester United lost against 10 men for the second time in just over t
Carrick knows the 11 days between the chastening defeat by Newcastle and the visit of Aston Villa to Old Trafford on 15 March could be the most important of his season.
