Capitals Acquire Timothy Liljegren From San Jose Sharks

The Washington Capitals have acquired Timothy Liljegren from the San Jose Sharks. Chris Patrick, senior vice president and general manager, announced the move today.

The Capitals have acquired the defenceman in exchange for a fourth-round pick in the 2026 NHL Draft. The draft pick originally belonged to Vegas.

Liljegren’s Performance with San Jose

Liljegren, aged 26, has played 43 games with San Jose this season. He has recorded 11 points, with one goal and 10 assists.

The Kristianstad, Sweden native’s stats with the Sharks include:

  • Second among San Jose defensemen in blocks (83)
  • Tied for third in assists
  • Fourth in points
  • Fourth in ice time per game (20:08)

Liljegren’s NHL and International Career

Liljegren was originally drafted by the Toronto Maple Leafs in the first round (17th overall) of the 2017 NHL Draft. He has played 307 career NHL games with San Jose and Toronto.

In his NHL career, Liljegren has recorded 93 points, with 21 goals and 72 assists. He has averaged 18:14 of ice time per game.

Liljegren has also played 150 career American Hockey League games, registering 74 points (11 goals, 63 assists). He won the Calder Cup with the Toronto Marlies in 2018.

International Representation

Internationally, Liljegren has represented Sweden at several tournaments. These include the 2016 and 2017 U18 World Junior Championships, the 2018 U20 World Junior Championship, and the 2023 World Championship.

He won silver medals in 2016 and 2018.

The Capitals will be hoping Liljegren’s experience and skill will bolster their defensive lineup.
