Caleb Williams Impresses Chicago Bears’ Coaching Staff

Chicago Bears head coach Ben Johnson has observed significant progress in quarterback Caleb Williams. Johnson noted improvements in the team’s offensive operations during their recent organised team activities (OTA).

Improved Offensive Communication

Last offseason, Johnson had to halt practice to address issues with the offense, including Williams, before plays even began. The Bears’ pre-snap operation caused concern for the head coach. This year, at the Bears’ first OTA practice, Williams demonstrated an understanding of Johnson’s expectations, which included quick play calls and urgent huddle breaks.

Johnson said the quarterback plays a huge part in the communication in the huddle, the urgency to the line of scrimmage, and the tempo. He added that the players have taken the instructions to heart. Johnson feels good about where they are at.

The focus has shifted to a deeper understanding of each concept. Johnson spoke about potentially expanding on progression reads and coverage indicators to accelerate the team’s vision.

Continuity Benefits the Offense

The continuity within the Bears’ coaching staff allows for a more advanced approach to the offense. Johnson mentioned that everyone knows the expectations in the building. He noted that there is a different level of understanding.

Despite losing their offensive coordinator this offseason, Johnson remains the play-caller as head coach. This stability is seen as beneficial for both Johnson and Williams.

“I know our quarterback room is at a different place than it was a year ago,” Johnson said.

Attendance at Voluntary OTA

Montez Sweat was absent from Thursday’s volunteer OTA practice. Kyler Gordon participated in warmups but not in drills.

Jaylon Johnson, who had previously missed voluntary work, was in attendance. Ben Johnson said he appreciates Johnson being there with his teammates and getting to know them. He said it is important because there are a lot of new faces in the building, and you can’t overstate the importance of getting to know your buddy, because you’re going to lay it out on the line for him on game day.

When asked about Jaylon Johnson’s condition after his groin problems last season, Ben Johnson said he just got here, so I don’t know. We’ll find out.

Other Team Updates

  • Grady Jarrett said that “I owe Chicago a better year” after being hampered by a knee injury early last season.

The Bears’ coaching staff is optimistic about the progress made during the OTA, especially regarding the performance and understanding of Caleb Williams.
