Marie-Louise Eta’s historic first game as interim head coach of Union Berlin ended in a 2-1 defeat at home to Wolfsburg. The 34-year-old became the first woman to take charge of a men’s team in one of the top five European leagues on Saturday. Union Berlin turned to Eta after sacking Steffen Baumgart last weekend.
Wolfsburg took the lead in the 11th minute with a goal from Patrick Wimmer. They doubled their advantage a minute into the second half when Christian Eriksen set up Dzenan Pejcinovic. Oliver Burke, formerly of Nottingham Forest, later reduced the deficit for Union Berlin.
Kramaric Double Downs Dortmund
Hoffenheim defeated Borussia Dortmund 2-1, with Andrej Kramaric scoring two penalties. One of the penalties came deep in second-half stoppage time. This result gives Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich the chance to wrap up the title with a win or a draw over Stuttgart on Sunday.
Dortmund are on 64 points with four matches left. Bayern are 12 clear at the top. Bayern will have to do it without Serge Gnabry, who could miss this summer’s World Cup after tearing a muscle in his thigh.
Kramaric scored a 42nd-minute penalty to give Hoffenheim the lead. Serhou Guirassy levelled for Dortmund with a low drive. Kramaric then scored from the spot again in stoppage time after a handball.
Hamburg and Werder Bremen Clash On and Off Pitch
Werder Bremen’s 3-1 win over Hamburg was marred by clashes between fans and police. Hamburg fans lit flares and fires in the stadium. Both teams are battling to avoid the drop, and tensions ran high.
Hamburg finished the game with 10 players. Both Hamburg’s and Werder’s assistant coaches were also sent off in stoppage time.
Flares and projectiles were launched across the pitch and into the home fans’ stands after the final whistle, with fires also being lit. Police intervened to clear the tribune, clashing with the visiting fans. Some flares landed close to Werder players still on the pitch.
Werder coach Daniel Thioune said the risk of injury was very high, adding that some things hit the players next to him. Thioune has also coached Hamburg in the past.
