Bristol City’s Defensive Woes Deepen Ahead of Middlesbrough Clash

Bristol City’s defensive problems have worsened as George Tanner is set to miss several weeks with an ankle injury, adding to an already extensive injury list ahead of their match against Middlesbrough.

Tanner Ruled Out, Defensive Crisis Escalates

George Tanner, who has played the full 90 minutes of Bristol City’s past 11 Championship games, sustained a tear in his ankle ligament during the 2-0 defeat against Leicester. He will now be unavailable for the Middlesbrough game and subsequent fixtures. This absence further compounds City’s defensive woes, with Rob Dickie and Rob Atkinson already expected to be out for the remainder of the season.

Luke McNally remains on the sidelines as he recovers from an anterior cruciate ligament injury. Noah Eile is now the only available specialist centre-back.

Manager Gerhard Struber told BBC Radio Bristol that Tanner will be out for ‘weeks’.

Limited Options Force Tactical Changes

Gerhard Struber acknowledged the need for tactical adjustments due to the mounting injuries. He stated that the team will have to be more creative, potentially fielding players out of their best positions.

On-loan Boro duo Neto Borges and Delano Burgzorg are ineligible for the match against their parent club.

Struber said the team ‘have to be creative’ as players will be lining up out of position in the coming games.

‘Maybe not every single player is in his best position,’ Struber said.

‘But this is sometimes the situation and we have to bring out the best and what could be a good mix and could help us in the end – especially against a team like Middlesbrough – a good chance for a good performance.’

Struber Calls for Character and Optimism

Struber admitted that not bringing in another player during the transfer window ‘seems smarter’ in light of the injuries. He also mentioned discussions with players to identify those best suited for versatile roles.

Struber has asked players to show character and mentality.

‘This is a really big time to show character, show a big mentality individually but also team-wise.’

‘It’s a tough time but we have to handle this time with a good mentality, a clear mindset and also a really big optimism.’

Recent Form and Team Changes

  • Bristol City have lost their past three Championship matches.
  • They have lost four matches including the FA Cup defeat to Port Vale.
  • They have scored just once during that time.

Zak Vyner was sold to Wrexham in January. Jamie Knight-Lebel remains on loan at League Two Swindon.

Despite the challenges, Struber views the Middlesbrough match as ‘a good chance for a good performance’.
