NASCAR Hall of Famer Bill Elliott has been announced as a participant in the Heritage Invitational’s International Race of Champions (IROC) event. He will join a lineup of motorsports legends on Friday, April 10.
Elliott to Race Alongside Motorsports Legends
The Heritage Invitational will be held at the newly opened Ten Tenths Motor Club. The IROC series, dating back to the early 1970s, showcases drivers from various racing disciplines competing in equally prepared cars.
Elliott, previously named celebrant for the Heritage Invitational weekend, joins a field including four-time NASCAR Cup Series Champion Jeff Gordon and 2004 NASCAR Cup Series champion Kurt Busch. Scott Pruett, a five-time IMSA champion, will also compete alongside amateur vintage racers in authentic IROC race cars used in series competition between 1974 and 2006.
“Awesome Bill from Dawsonville” Returns to the Track
Known as “Awesome Bill from Dawsonville,” Elliott is considered an icon of NASCAR’s golden era. He secured 44 Cup Series wins across four decades. The 1988 NASCAR Cup Series champion was also named NASCAR’s Most Popular Driver a record 16 times.
Ray Evernham, executive director of the Heritage Invitational and co-owner of the IROC series, expressed his excitement about Elliott’s participation. He stated that fans will have the chance to see Elliott compete alongside an incredible list of competitors.
Elliott had a remarkable 1985 season, securing 11 wins, including the Daytona 500, Southern 500 and Winston 500. This earned him the moniker “Million Dollar Bill” for winning three of the sport’s four crown jewel events in the same season and acquiring a $1 million Winston Million bonus.
Heritage Invitational Event Details
IROC has historically placed NASCAR, IndyCar, Formula 1 and sports car stars on the same level. The Heritage Invitational at the Ten Tenths Motor Club continues this legacy.
In addition to Friday’s on-track action, a Vintage Indy exhibition and a celebrity Pro-Am showdown will take place to support Speedway Children’s Charities. On Saturday, April 11, a concours featuring over 115 rare and exclusive collector cars will be held.
