The Colorado Avalanche are aiming to even the series against the Vegas Golden Knights after losing Game 1 of the Western Conference Final.
Winners of the Presidents’ Trophy, the Avalanche are not accustomed to losing. During the regular season, they only lost 16 of 82 games in regulation and never more than two games in a row.
Avalanche Focus on Correcting Mistakes
Colorado coach Jared Bednar said he wouldn’t deliver a speech to turn the series around. He stated he knows the team’s goals and mindset.
The Vegas Golden Knights took home-ice advantage with a 4-2 win on Wednesday. They jumped out to a three-goal lead and then held on despite a third-period pushback from Colorado.
The Avalanche spent Thursday reviewing film and holding an optional skate at their practice facility. The film work and some hard conversations delivered the message the team needed to hear.
Bednar said the message was pretty pointed on what the team needs to do. He added that the motivation to play is there for all of their guys.
Bednar said it is about the team trying to be the best version of themselves. He believes they weren’t in Game 1 and feels like they can be better.
Makar’s Status Remains Uncertain
All-everything defenseman Cale Makar, who missed Game 1 with an undisclosed injury, took part in the skate. Bednar said he had no update on Makar and that he remains day to day.
Makar has skated each of the past two days after missing three practices since the Avalanche eliminated the Minnesota Wild in a five-game second-round victory on May 13. Makar is a finalist this season for the Norris Trophy, awarded to the NHL’s best defenseman.
Veterans Aim for a Strong Response
Forward Nazem Kadri said there is no question there will be a response. He noted that the team responded in Game 4 after losing Game 3 in the last series with a 5-2 win.
The veterans within the team thrive on accountability and don’t mind being negatively highlighted in a video session. They know it is all part of the journey they want to take.
Game 2 is scheduled for Friday at Ball Arena.
