Ashun Wu is aiming to make history at the Volvo China Open, taking place at Enhance Anting Golf Club this week. He will be attempting to become the first player to successfully defend his title and win the Volvo China Open for the third time. The tournament marks the 31st year of the event.
Wu Overcomes Injury for Title Defence
Wu, a five-time DP World Tour winner, has only participated in ten events since his last victory. This reduced schedule was due to a tennis elbow injury. However, the 40-year-old is confident he has overcome the injury.
Hillier Returns After New Zealand Open Win
Daniel Hillier is making his first appearance since winning his national open in March. His victory in the New Zealand Open catapulted him into the top 100 in the Official World Golf Ranking. This win came mere days after his wedding to Siobhan.
The 27-year-old currently holds tenth position in the Race to Dubai Delivered by DP World Tour Rankings. Hillier will be aiming to continue his form, having achieved four top ten finishes across six starts this season.
Campillo and Chacarra Target US PGA Championship Spot
Jorge Campillo and Eugenio Chacarra are also looking to capitalise this week in Shanghai. The pair are currently third and fourth on the Asian Swing Rankings respectively.
The top three players at the conclusion of the swing will earn a place in next month’s US PGA Championship. They will be aiming to make their mark in this penultimate event.
Chinese Contingent Aims to Impress
A strong Chinese contingent will be competing, including 18-year-old Yanhan Zhou and 21-year-old Wenyi Ding. Zhou is the 2025 China Tour Order of Merit winner, and finished in a share of third last month in Hainan. Ding, the 2024 Asia-Pacific Amateur Champion, was runner-up in Australia late last year.
The Volvo China Open is co-sanctioned with the China Tour, hosted by the China Golf Association, and title-sponsored and promoted by Volvo Cars. This year the event returns to Enhance Anting Golf Club for a second consecutive year.
- The total prize fund for the event is US$2.75 million.
- 3,500 Race to Dubai points are on offer.
- The Volvo China Open was first played in 1995.
Wu will need to outplay a strong field of local and international talent to hold the trophy aloft again.
