Aryna Sabalenka Voices Shock Over Miami Open Scheduling

Aryna Sabalenka has expressed her surprise at the scheduling decisions during the Miami Open. The WTA world No. 1 was “really shocked” by the decision to favour the match between Carlos Alcaraz and Joao Fonseca over her own.

Sabalenka’s Reaction to Potential Cancellation

Sabalenka revealed details of the conversation behind the scenes. She said she was actually shocked that they were considering cancelling her match, or giving her a couple of options of the stadiums. She questioned why Alcaraz and Fonseca could not start later, given the night session the previous day started at 9:00 with de Minaur playing.

Sabalenka decided to play so she could have a day off if she won. This would allow her time to prepare and recharge. She was happy they gave her options so she could choose what was best for her.

When asked why she was shocked, Sabalenka replied she had never dealt with something like that. She thought it was not a big problem for her to play, with the night session waiting and starting a little bit later. Sabalenka guessed that the tournament tickets played a role in the decision.

Empathy for Tournament Directors

Sabalenka empathised with the tough call made by the directors. She noted that Alcaraz was playing, making it a situation involving two number ones.

Despite the scheduling issues, Sabalenka defeated Ann Li in straight sets: 7-6 (5), 6-4.

Sabalenka Advances in Miami

Sabalenka improved to 18-1 on the season. She will face Caty McNally in the Round of 32 tomorrow.

The Miami Open presented by Itau runs through March 29.
