Golf fans in the 1960s saw Jack Nicklaus as the usurper. Four-time Masters champion Arnold Palmer was The King, and Nicklaus was seen as the villain. After Palmer’s last Masters win in 1964, Nicklaus began to assert his dominance.
Nicklaus’s Ascendancy at Augusta
Nicklaus won the 1963 Masters between Palmer’s last two titles. In 1965, he won again by nine strokes over Palmer, posting a then tournament record of 17-under par 271.
The 1966 Masters saw Nicklaus, Tommy Jacobs and Gay Brewer tied at even par 288. Nicklaus won in a playoff the next day, becoming the Masters’ first back-to-back champion. Brewer would win the green jacket one year later.
