Arizona Wildcats Breeze Past Long Island in NCAA Tournament

Arizona initiated its NCAA Tournament run with a comfortable victory, defeating Long Island 92-58. Brayden Burries scored 18 points, including four 3-pointers, while Koa Peat contributed 15 points. Arizona’s dominant performance underscored its status as the tournament’s second overall seed.

Wildcats’ Dominant Performance

The Big 12 regular-season and tournament champion Wildcats (33-2) quickly established their dominance. Following closely behind Duke in the seedings, Arizona showcased its capabilities. Coach Tommy Lloyd emphasised respecting every opponent, ensuring his players avoided complacency. He told his players that in 1-16 games, anything can happen, and it’s important not to get emotionally caught up if the game is close at half.

Arizona pushed the pace on offense and stifled the Sharks with defence. The Wildcats established a double-digit lead early, extending it to 27 points in the first half. The fans at Viejas Arena were delighted, creating a home game atmosphere with a sea of red.

Key Contributions and Team Effort

Jaden Bradley, named Big 12 player of the year, scored seven points and highlighted the fans’ contribution to the team’s energy. Arizona’s offensive balance was evident, with six players scoring at least eight points. Burries led Arizona, which hit 57% of its shots in the first half, needing just 10 attempts.

Even 11 missed free throws didn’t slow the Wildcats’ roll. Arizona committed only three.

Long Island’s Perspective

Mason Porter-Brown scored 15 points for the Sharks (24-11), while Greg Gordon added 12. Long Island, under coach Rod Strickland, had surged from a three-win season to win the NEC regular-season and tournament titles. Strickland acknowledged the challenge posed by Arizona, a team predicted to win the tournament. He felt the magnitude of the game might have affected his players initially, but he was happy that they played a competitive second half.

The Sharks simply couldn’t match the depth and talent of the Wildcats. Strickland added that his team knew it was going to be tough.

Looking Ahead

Arizona will face Utah State in the West Region bracket. The Wildcats have a chance to win the first title for a team from the Western U.S. since Arizona’s 1997 victory.
