Antonelli Leads Russell in Japanese Grand Prix at Suzuka

The Suzuka Circuit in Japan is hosting the third grand prix of the 2026 Formula 1 season.

Mercedes’ Kimi Antonelli, after taking pole for the second straight race, will lead into Turn 1, followed by teammate George Russell.

Verstappen’s Frustration and Mercedes’ Opportunity

Oscar Piastri and Charles Leclerc will start right behind the Mercedes pair. Max Verstappen finds himself starting in 11th position after a Q2 exit, leaving him feeling ‘beyond frustrated’.

Verstappen has historically dominated this grand prix, winning the last four from 2022-2025.

Red Bull’s early struggles this season mean that a fifth consecutive win for Verstappen on Sunday would require something extraordinary. Mercedes will be hoping to capitalise on their front-row lockout and take their third win in three races this year.

Suzuka: A Driver’s Challenge

In 2025, Antonelli, then 18, set a fastest lap and led a race, becoming the youngest driver in history to achieve both in Japan.

The 18-turn Suzuka Circuit is a fan favourite, known for its unique ‘figure-of-eight’ layout – the only one of its kind on the calendar.

Key Sections of the Circuit

The course is a relentless test for drivers. This is especially true through the “Esses” – Turns 3 through 6 – and the famous corners Spoon and 130R.

The race at Suzuka is being broadcast on ESPN.
