Andrej Stojaković Steps Out of Father’s NBA Shadow

Andrej Stojaković, son of three-time NBA All-Star Peja Stojaković, is making a name for himself during Illinois’ NCAA Tournament run.

One of the first things often mentioned about Stojaković is his famous father.

Cameras sometimes find his father in the crowd watching his games, and their hug after Illinois’ Elite Eight win over Iowa circulated online.

Making His Own Mark

Andrej Stojaković is trying to forge his own path beyond his father’s legacy.

During Illinois’ run to its national semifinal, the 6-foot-7 junior wing averaged 15 points on 59.5% shooting and three rebounds in the four games.

He was named to the All-South Region team.

Andrej has a smooth, athletic game, different from his dad, who was a lethal shooter and is second all time in 3-pointers made for the Sacramento Kings.

According to Illinois assistant coach Geoff Alexander, Andrej is trying to carve out his own path and identity.

Pressure of a Famous Father

Illinois coach Brad Underwood told a story about Peja visiting Illinois with Andrej.

Peja walked into Illinois’ gym and nailed 13 straight 3-pointers.

“The man still can fill it up,” Alexander said.

Andrej admitted there’s pressure in trying to make his own way.

“I’ve dealt with that expectation and pressure my whole life,” Andrej said.

Illinois will play Connecticut in the national semifinal.
