Amir ‘Aura’ Khan Returns to McNeese for March Madness

Amir “Aura” Khan, the student manager who gained attention last year, is back with McNeese. He will be rapping the soundtrack and leading the Cowboys out with his boombox for March Madness.

Khan’s Viral Rise

In 2025, Khan performed rap songs while leading the team, with teammates around him. He reportedly acquired over $100,000 in NIL deals, using it to purchase jewellery. Khan stated that the players were crucial to his success, promoting everything and wanting the best for him.

Senior guard DJ Richards Jr. noted Khan’s humility despite the attention. Richards mentioned that Khan is often portrayed inaccurately on social media. He believes Khan would be content without the attention.

March Madness Impact

Khan’s presence became a key part of McNeese’s journey. The 12th-seeded McNeese achieved a 69-67 upset against No. 5 seed Clemson in the first round. They subsequently lost to No. 4-seeded Purdue 76-62 in the following round.

Return to McNeese

Khan briefly moved to NC State with coach Will Wade. He returned to McNeese due to academic complications with transferring credits. Staying at NC State would have required him to be a sophomore, while returning to McNeese allowed him to finish as an academic senior. “I decided to come back just because it’s home,” Khan said.

Khan explained his connection to Lake Charles. “I live in Lake Charles, five minutes away from campus. The community and people of Lake Charles are amazing. Every game day, they pack our arena out, and it’s a special feeling. So why not continue to do it until I graduate?”

Khan’s profile grew even after McNeese’s exit from last year’s tournament. He secured more than 20 NIL deals.
