American Alex Michelsen has made a promising start to his French Open campaign.
Michelsen’s Opening Round Progress
The 21-year-old Californian, currently ranked No. 42 in the world, is competing against Alexander Shevchenko. Michelsen has made a good start on Court 12. He polished off the opening set, 6-2, after taking five games on the trot. He needed just one set point and two break points, and didn’t give Shevchenko a look on his own serve either.
It was tidy from Michelsen, who has not been beyond the first round in Paris in his previous two attempts. Even better — Michelsen has just broken in the opening game of the second set to love.
Świątek and Rybakina Advance
Elsewhere at the French Open, Iga Świątek and Elena Rybakina both breezed through their matches. Świątek is a four-time French Open champion.
Monfils Bows Out
Gaël Monfils played his final professional singles match at Roland Garros. He lost to Hugo Gaston.
Other Matches of Note
Ben Shelton, Amanda Anisimova and Frances Tiafoe are all safely through to the second round. Jiří Lehečka was a shock exit in straight sets to Pablo Carreño Busta. Liudmila Samsonova is down a break in the opening set on Court 4. Jasmine Paolini faced Dayana Yastremska on Court Simonne-Mathieu.
Świątek may have to play Jelena Ostapenko in the third round, a player she’s never beaten. She’s in the same half of the draw as Australian Open champion Elena Rybakina.
