Dre Greenlaw has admitted he “just wasn’t happy” during his time with the Denver Broncos in the 2025 season. The linebacker played eight games, starting seven, and recorded 43 tackles before being released.
Greenlaw signed a one-year deal with the San Francisco 49ers in March. He is appreciative of the opportunity, and the $10.49 million compensation, but is looking forward to a brighter future in a familiar home.
Greenlaw’s Frustrations in Denver
Greenlaw explained his frustrations on Terron Armstead’s “The Set” podcast. He said his unhappiness stemmed from not feeling healthy and not having the same “twitch” or “gear” he felt he needed. Greenlaw felt it was tough when he was being paid $11 million but was only on the field 50 percent of the time.
He also found it difficult having to take reps from linebackers who were playing well. Greenlaw had never been in a position where reps were split in such a way. Ultimately, it made him unhappy.
“Everything works out for a reason,” Greenlaw said. “I don’t regret none of it. I’m thankful for it all, for Sean (Payton) and everybody that accepted me into that organisation, teammates and all. But, yeah, I’m excited to be a Niner.”
Return to San Francisco
After spending one year in Denver, Greenlaw is back with the 49ers and familiar faces, including head coach Kyle Shanahan. He will be learning from another new defensive coordinator, Raheem Morris. Greenlaw had previously worked with DeMeco Ryans, Steve Wilks and Nick Sorensen.
Greenlaw spent the first six years of his career in San Francisco. An Achilles injury in Super Bowl LVIII led to a prolonged recovery and his move to the Broncos in 2025.
Greenlaw’s return is seen as a positive move for the 49ers, who experienced the importance of squad depth in 2025. He is also reuniting with Fred Warner.
Relationships Key to 49ers Return
Greenlaw emphasised the importance of the relationships he built within the 49ers organisation. He highlighted his connections with the Yorks (ownership), general manager John Lynch, and Kyle Shanahan.
He also spoke about his special connection with Fred Warner, who joined the team the year before him.
Greenlaw’s return to the 49ers marks a new chapter after a challenging period in Denver. He aims to recapture his form and contribute to the team’s success.
