Tucson police are ramping up their presence in anticipation of potential crowd disturbances as the Arizona Wildcats compete in the Final Four. The move comes as law enforcement aims to ensure safety during celebrations.
Increased Police Presence Downtown
An enhanced law enforcement presence will be seen on University Boulevard, Congress, and Fourth Avenue. According to Tucson Police Department Capt. Lauren Pettey, officers will be equipped with riot gear to manage any potential unrest.
The goal is to allow everyone to celebrate safely by providing enhanced law enforcement measures and additional resources. Traffic enforcement will also begin Saturday morning, with meters on University being hooded to prepare for street closures.
Barricades will be set up a few hours before the game, blocking off the street. The aim is to ensure pedestrians and bicyclists can move freely on University, Congress, and Fourth Avenue.
Echoes of Past Riots
The increased security is a direct response to violent riots that followed Arizona’s loss to Duke in the 2001 national title game and the 2014 Elite Eight loss to Wisconsin. In those instances, frustrated fans congregated on the streets, set cars ablaze, and threw bottles and cans at officers.
Businesses Prepare for Crowds
Bar and restaurant owners are aware of the history of riots. Jonathan Graham of Frog & Firkin said they are preparing for the worst, with entry by reservation only to avoid exceeding capacity.
Graham stated every employee, along with extra security, will be working. He added the hope is that the climate is different now and people are more chill.
University Upping Security
The University of Arizona’s Office of Public Safety and UAPD are also increasing safety measures before the game. They are urging students to celebrate responsibly, make a plan, and contact UAPD if they need assistance.
