Man Utd Out of UWCL After Late Bayern Munich Goals

Manchester United’s Women’s Champions League journey has ended after Bayern Munich scored two late goals to dash their hopes. In their debut season in the competition, United were aiming to reach the semi-finals, but Bayern’s late surge secured a 5-3 aggregate victory for the German side.

Malard’s Early Goal Provides Hope

Trailing 3-2 from the first leg, Manchester United got off to a strong start at Allianz Arena. Melvine Malard forced a save from Bayern goalkeeper Ena Mahmutovic within the first four minutes. United remained on the front foot, and Mahmutovic’s clearance bounced off her own defender, allowing Malard to tap the ball into an unguarded net.

Mahmutovic was again called into action to tip Malard’s shot around the post as United continued to threaten, but Bayern gradually grew into the game. Bayern were unusually sloppy in possession throughout the first half.

Bayern’s Second-Half Pressure Pays Off

Bayern dominated the second half, ensuring the game was played almost exclusively in United’s half. Phallon Tullis-Joyce made a save to deny Pernille Harder. Millie Turner blocked Giulia Gwinn, but Bayern’s pressure eventually paid off.

In the 81st minute, Glodis Viggosdottir headed in Carolin Simon’s corner, levelling the score. Three minutes later, Linda Dallman fired the ball into the net after Viggosdottir’s header had been cleared off the line by Malard.

Bayern Advance, United Look to WSL

Bayern Munich advance to the semi-finals for the third time. They will likely face three-time winners Barcelona, who lead Real Madrid 6-2 after the first leg of their quarter-final.

Marc Skinner’s side now have more than three weeks to recover from this defeat. Their focus will turn to qualifying for the competition again through the Women’s Super League.

  • Bayern advance 5-3 on aggregate
  • Viggosdottir equalised in the 81st minute
  • Dallman settled the tie three minutes later

Defeat at Old Trafford last week meant United were always facing an uphill battle against a Bayern side who have not lost a home match since March 2025.
