Sandy Alcantara Aims to Lead Miami Marlins Against White Sox

Sandy Alcantara is aiming to guide the Miami Marlins, as they face the Chicago White Sox. The match is the rubber game of a three-game series.

Alcantara’s Role as Team Leader

Alcantara is considered the leader of Miami’s staff. At 30, he is also seen as the leader of the team, given the youth of the Marlins.

Last week, Alcantara secured a win against the Colorado Rockies. He became the first Miami starter in 11 years to complete seven innings on Opening Day. He threw 73 pitches, allowing one unearned run on four hits and two walks. His sinker reached 97 mph, but three of his five strikeouts were on his changeup.

“It’s a long season, but it’s better if you start winning,” said Alcantara.

Praise for Alcantara

Marlins manager Clayton McCullough noted Alcantara’s efficiency on Opening Day.

Pete Fairbanks, new to the team, praised Alcantara. “Sandy is a premier arm talent,” Fairbanks said. “Hopefully, that was a sign of great things to come.”

White Sox’s Starting Pitcher: Shane Smith

The White Sox are set to start right-hander Shane Smith. Last year, Smith had an All-Star rookie season, making 29 starts and going 7-8 with a 3.81 ERA.

In one start this year, Smith’s numbers are 0-1 with a 16.20 ERA. Smith figures to again mix five pitches, including his fastball (94-96 mph). He also throws a changeup, curveball, slider and sinker.

Smith allowed four runs in 1 2/3 innings on Opening Day last week.

Jimenez Seeks Opportunity

Leo Jimenez is striving to make a difference for Miami’s offense.

“It’s a good opportunity for me to grow as a player and learn as much as I can,” Jimenez said.

Murakami’s Debut Season

The White Sox offense is led by Munetaka Murakami. Murakami is considered a rookie in Major League Baseball.

  • Murakami won Japan’s Triple Crown in 2022.
  • In Tuesday’s 9-2 loss to Miami, Murakami went 1-for-4 with an RBI.
  • In five games, he has four RBIs and a team-leading three homers.

If Smith can settle down, the White Sox will have a chance to win this series.
