Brian Gutiérrez’s performance for the Selección Mexicana has caught the eye of manager Javier Aguirre. Aguirre had been concerned after Marcel Ruíz was ruled out of the World Cup. But Gutiérrez’s play against Portugal has eased those worries.
Gutiérrez a Solution for Mexico
Javier Aguirre said that Brian Gutiérrez and Marcel Ruíz are very similar. Aguirre added that, in the absence of Marcel, he looked for similar profiles. He wanted players who want the ball and don’t lose it, and are offensive minded.
The Selección Mexicana had been following Brian Gutiérrez, a Mexican American, since 2023. Andrés Lillini, director of national youth teams, had been scouting him. There had been contact with Gutiérrez, who came through the Chicago Fire youth system, three years prior to his first call-up. The initial plan was for him to join the Under 23s.
“Aguirre instilled in us what it is to wear and represent this country, this shield, it is a pride for me,” said Brian Gutiérrez, who was born in Chicago to Mexican parents.
Rapid Rise to National Team
In November 2025, Brian Gutiérrez shared a photo with his Mexican passport. This immediately led to speculation about a possible move to Chivas or the Selección Mexicana. Within six months, he is being considered for both teams, just days before the World Cup.
“It is a dream come true, it is something incredible, I live day by day and the moment,” Gutiérrez explained.
US Regret Over Gutiérrez
Following Brian Gutiérrez’s performance against Portugal and the United States’ heavy defeat to Belgium, there has been criticism in the United States. Some have pointed out that Mauricio Pochettino missed out on the Chivas midfielder. Aguirre found his solution in Chicago.
“Aguirre instilled in us what it is to wear and represent this country, this shield, it is a pride for me,” said Brian Gutiérrez.
Brian Gutiérrez acknowledged his pride in representing Mexico and living in the moment.
