Ecuador’s national football team is set to face the Netherlands in a friendly match, aiming to extend their historic unbeaten streak. The team, under the guidance of Sebastián Beccacece, has reached 16 games without a defeat.
The match in Eindhoven on Tuesday, 31 March, will be a test for La Tricolor, who are looking to build on their current form.
Ecuador’s Impressive Unbeaten Streak
Ecuador’s impressive run consists of six victories and ten draws, beginning on 10 September 2024. Their last defeat was on 6 September, a 1-0 loss to Brazil in Curitiba, which was also Beccacece’s debut.
Five of those wins came during World Cup Qualifying matches. Only one victory was in a friendly, against New Zealand last year (2-0). The other four friendlies ended in draws, including a 1-1 draw against Morocco the previous week.
Defensive Strength and Offensive Challenges
Ecuador’s defensive capabilities have been a key factor in their success. This defensive solidity allowed them to finish second in the World Cup Qualifiers, behind Argentina.
They managed this despite starting the tournament with three points deducted due to the Byron Castillo case.
However, Ecuador has faced challenges in converting their opportunities. While they secured valuable draws in difficult situations, they struggled to win at home. In the World Cup Qualifiers, they had a run of four 0-0 draws, which ended with a victory against Argentina in the final match.
- Ecuador has kept a clean sheet in 12 of their 16 matches.
- Their defence is anchored by elite centre-backs William Pacho and Piero Hincapié.
- Joel Ordóñez has shown consistent improvement.
Looking Ahead to the Netherlands Match
In their previous match against Morocco, Ecuador showed improvement in offensive creation. However, they still struggled to finish their attacks. The upcoming match against the Netherlands will be another opportunity to confirm their progress or maintain their unbeaten streak, even without securing a win.
The Netherlands match will be a test to see if they can continue their run.
