Romelu Lukaku has spoken out about speculation regarding his future with Napoli, dismissing rumours of a potential exit. The striker is currently in Belgium receiving treatment for an injury, a move that has reportedly caused friction with the Serie A club.
Lukaku Addresses Napoli Exit Rumours
Lukaku has insisted that he would “never turn his back” on Napoli, addressing concerns about his commitment to the club. Rumours had suggested that Lukaku’s choice to undergo treatment in Belgium, without initially seeking permission, indicated a desire to distance himself from the Italian side. He reportedly angered Napoli by staying in Belgium after withdrawing from the national squad, instead of returning to the club’s training ground.
The 32-year-old has moved to dispel any notion that he is seeking to leave Naples, emphasising his connection with the club and its supporters.
Injury and Rehabilitation Clarified
Lukaku explained his absence from the club, stating: “This season has been very challenging for me, between the injury and personal loss. I know there has been a lot of noise over the last few days about my situation and it is important to clarify everything. The truth is that in recent weeks I didn’t feel well physically, I underwent some checks while I was in Belgium and it turned out there was inflammation and fluid in the iliopsoas muscle, near the scar tissue,” the forward explained.
He added that it was the second time he had experienced this problem since returning at the beginning of November. Lukaku chose to rehabilitate in Belgium to ensure he is ready when called upon.
“I think most of you saw the interview I did in Verona: I could never turn my back on Napoli, never. There is nothing I would want more than to play and make my team win, but right now I have to make sure I am clinically 100%, because lately I wasn’t and this also weighed on me mentally.”
Timeline for Return
The rehabilitation process is expected to keep Lukaku in Belgium for at least another two weeks. This period is considered vital for the striker to regain the sharpness he has lacked since returning to Italy. Lukaku admitted that his inability to perform at his best has affected him both physically and mentally.
Communication Lines Open
Despite the initial issues surrounding his location, reports indicate that communication between Lukaku and Napoli remains open. The club are monitoring his progress as he addresses the inflammation in his iliopsoas muscle. They hope this intensive period of recovery in Belgium will provide a lasting solution to his fitness issues.
Lukaku concluded: “It has been a very intense year, but in the end I will make it and I will help Napoli and the national team reach their respective goals when I am called. That’s all I want.” The aim is for the striker to return for the final part of the season as Napoli aim to achieve their objectives in domestic competition.
