Andrej Stojakovic assesses each game individually to determine what he needs to contribute when he enters the game, usually around the first media timeout.
His priorities include perimeter defence and attacking the basket, but his other responsibilities vary from game to game. Stojakovic understands that he and the other Illinois bench players must inject energy if the starters are not performing well.
If the energy levels are already high, Stojakovic knows the key is to maintain that momentum.
Stojakovic’s Role Within the Bench Unit
Stojakovic is part of an Illini bench unit that includes Zvonimir Ivisic and Ben Humrichous. These three players typically enter the game around the 16-minute mark of the first quarter, joining freshmen Keaton Wagler and David Mirkovic.
Stojakovic told Illini Inqurier that the bench players aren’t trying to outshine the starters. However, they know they must bring a different kind of energy.
“Obviously, the first five guys are going to come out playing as hard as they can. We’ve got to do them a favour, and when they ask for a sub, we’ve got to play equally as hard,” Stojakovic said ahead of Thursday’s Sweet Sixteen game against Houston.
Bench Impact on Illinois’ Success
Stojakovic recognises his role in ensuring the team’s success. He focuses on bringing energy and maintaining the intensity of the game when he comes off the bench.
His contributions, alongside those of Ivisic and Humrichous, are designed to support the starting five and contribute to the team’s overall performance.
The Illini bench aims to sustain a high level of play throughout the game, ensuring no drop-off when substitutions are made.
The Illinois team prepares for their Sweet Sixteen game against Houston, with Stojakovic ready to play his part.
