Ukraine Face Sweden in World Cup Playoff in Valencia

Ukraine are set to face Sweden in a World Cup playoff in Valencia, hoping to book a place at the summer tournament. Since Russia’s invasion, the team has been playing their matches at various locations across Europe. Now, Ukraine will spend a week in Valencia as they aim to qualify for the World Cup.

Ukraine’s Nomadic Existence

Ukraine have played in numerous cities including Lodz, Prague, Leverkusen, Wroclaw, Warsaw, Krakow, Murcia, Poznan and Trnava over the past four years. They have been unable to play in Kyiv since the full-scale invasion in February 2022. The upcoming match against Sweden will be held at Levante’s ground, Estadi Ciutat de Valencia.

Millions back home will be watching, despite the adversity they face. A strong support is also expected at the stadium in Valencia, with approximately 20,000 fans anticipated to attend.

Rebrov’s Resolve

Serhiy Rebrov, now the manager, was a player when Ukraine last appeared at a World Cup 20 years ago. He says his players will fight on the pitch and show character. Rebrov believes it is important for their country to be represented at the World Cup.

Defender Illia Zabarnyi acknowledges that playing in Kyiv would be preferable but invites fans to support them in Valencia. He said they need the support of their fans.

Key Players Missing

Rebrov is without some key players for the match. Artem Dovbyk is out for the season following thigh surgery. Oleksandr Zinchenko is also absent, having sustained a torn anterior cruciate ligament after joining Ajax in February.

Ruslan Malinovskyi and Yukhym Konoplya are suspended for the Sweden match. They would only be available for a potential playoff final against Poland or Albania.

Sweden Seek Revenge

Sweden will be looking to avenge their defeat against Ukraine in the last-16 of Euro 2020. Ukraine beat Sweden at Hampden Park in that match.

Ukraine have developed a habit of finding something extra from within.

They reached Euro 2024 and narrowly missed out on appearing in Qatar four years ago, despite outplaying Wales in Cardiff.
