Zion Williamson’s improved condition presents a challenge for the New York Knicks. He is slimmer and healthier ahead of his appearance at MSG.
Williamson has featured in 45 of the past 46 games. This is a significant achievement for a player whose career has been hampered by injuries.
Hart Praises Williamson’s Talent
Josh Hart, who played alongside Williamson in New Orleans, has spoken highly of his former teammate’s abilities. Hart told The Post, “Extremely talented. When he’s locked in and he’s focused, he’s one of probably 15 or 20 top players in the league, if not better.”
Hart added, “He’s a freak of nature. I say that with all due respect. He’s obviously extremely explosive, the way he’s able to maneuver and contort his body, and he has a great touch around the rim. That’s going to be a challenge for us. We got to make sure we’re just solid. Don’t swipe down. Don’t smack down. And try to make him finish.”
Hart highlighted Williamson’s impressive bursts and second jump. “I think what’s really impressive is that first burst but also his second jump,” Hart said. “When I first saw him, the way he shoots the ball around the rim, you’d think he has no touch. But he has an amazing touch. And the ones where he doesn’t, he has a quick enough second jump where he’s able to get the rebound and sometimes before guys even get off the ground.”
Pelicans’ Motivation
The Pelicans have won 12 of their past 19 games. Unlike some of the Knicks’ recent opponents, the Pelicans are not tanking.
They have no incentive to lose after trading their 2026 first-round pick to the Hawks.
The Knicks are facing a motivated team in the Pelicans. They also have to deal with an athletic bulldozer in Williamson, who has played at MSG twice previously as a professional – a win in 2024 and a loss in 2021.
Shamet’s Injury Update
Landry Shamet missed a second straight game. He has an official injury designation.
Shamet has a tibial plateau contusion, according to the Knicks. A league source indicated the injury is not considered major, and the guard is not expected to be sidelined for an extended period.
Shamet watched Sunday’s win over the Wizards in street clothes, when his injury designation was right knee soreness.
After being hyped by the NBA and scheduled for national broadcasts, Williamson has largely been away from the spotlight this season.
- He was also on a minutes restriction earlier this season.
- His per game averages are 21.3 points, 5.8 rebounds, 59.8 percent shooting, 29.7 minutes.
- These averages won’t garner any postseason awards.
Williamson is still a show and a problem the Knicks will have to deal with.
