Creighton’s Greg McDermott to Retire After Season

Greg McDermott, the head coach of Creighton, is set to retire at the end of the current season. Sources confirmed the news, signalling the end of his tenure with the university. His time at Creighton saw him win 365 games over 16 years.

Huss to Take Over in 2026-27

Alan Huss will be taking over the reins as coach. Huss had returned to the Creighton staff and was formally positioned for a year to take over this role. The transition was planned in April 2025, with Huss stepping down from his head coach role at High Point after leading them to the NCAA tournament. He was named coach-in-waiting with no finite timeline, and that timing is now he’ll take over for the 2026-27 season.

McDermott’s Legacy at Creighton

Across 25 Division I seasons, McDermott has a career record of 514-319. This includes stints as head coach at Northern Iowa, Iowa State and Creighton, with 13 overall NCAA tournament appearances. He memorably coached his son, Doug McDermott, from 2010-11 to 2013-14.

A significant part of McDermott’s legacy will be Creighton’s transition from the Missouri Valley Conference to the Big East. Creighton secured the Big East regular season title in the 2019-20 season. The team had records of .500 or above in Big East play in 11 of 13 seasons in the league.

Recent Performance and Future Games

Creighton struggled this year by the standard McDermott set, finishing 15-17. This season’s performance ended a run of 10 consecutive 20-win seasons. Despite the announcement, McDermott will remain in charge for Creighton’s appearance in The Crown, a college basketball postseason event.

Up until this season, Creighton had been on one of the best runs in school history. The team had reached five consecutive NCAA tournaments. They would have comfortably made the 2020 tournament after winning the regular-season Big East title that year.

McDermott nearly guided Creighton to the Final Four back in 2023. A free throw with 1.2 seconds left after an Andrew Nembhard foul sent San Diego State to the Final Four. Creighton was a No. 6 seed in that NCAA tournament and reached the Elite Eight.
